Hype Williams

Hype

Hype was born July 1970 in Queens, New York as Harold Williams. He is a former(?) graffiti artist, having tagged billboards, storefronts, etc. with HYPE. He first started making videos in 1991.

As legend tells it, Mr. Williams was sat down and given a tape of a lot of big time Propaganda Films directors' videos (Sednaoui, Fincher, etc). Those directors' work influenced the way he made his own work.

Mr. Williams became a hugely influential figure in hip-hop in the 1990's. He worked with almost every big-time star of the decade: Puff Daddy & The Family, Biggie, Missy Elliott, Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, and Tupac Shakur.

By the 2000's, Mr. Williams had worked with legendary figures of the new millenium like Jay Z, Kanye West, and Beyoncé. He also directed a film in 2004 starring DMX and Nas titled Belly.

His work is known for its clean-cut and fresh style, from early videos like Flava in Ya Ear (remix) to later videos like Workin for Puff Daddy and the Family and Ghost Town for Adam Lambert.

Mr. Williams has released one DVD for Palm Pictures titled The Videos: Volume One.
